Info: This Grand Concerto has 3 movements: 1) Allegro maestoso, 2) Adagio, 3) Polonoise. Total duration: ca. 25 minutes. It is orchestrated for: solo bassoon, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones (alto, tenor and bass), timpani, and strings. It is a very virtuosic piece, most likely written to the composer's uncle, Karl Bärmann (1782-1842), who happened to be a bassoonist in the Royal Orchestra in Berlin. In total there are space for 5 cadenzas, some of them are written out by the composer, some are not.

Title: Nocturne

Composer: Julius Bendix (1818-1871)

Restored by: Kristian Oma Rønnes

Instrumentation: Bassoon & String Quintet
Publisher: TrevCo Music Publishing (USA)

Published: 2017

Price: $32

Info: Nocturne for Bassoon & String Quintet was composed in Stockholm in 1851, and was written for the excellent solo bassoonist L Grabow, who was solo bassoonist in the Swedish Opera at that time. An interesting detail is Bendix’s note in his manuscript saying: “written to the solo bassoonist of the Royal Opera in Sweden and Norway”. Norway was in Union with Sweden from 1814 to 1905, which gave the composer the freedom to use this title for Mr. Grabow, even though Norway did not have its own opera house or company in Norway in 1851, whereas Sweden had one since the 1780s. Unfortunately it is unknown if Grabow premired the piece or not. However, 166 years after it was written it received its 21st Century premiere in February, 2017 by Robert Rønnes, using the current edition by Kristian Oma Rønnes.
